K-Electric is a publicly listed company headquartered in Karachi, Pakistan, with a minority stake held by the state. K-Electric was privatised in 2005. The company generates, procures, transmits and distributes electricity and is the only listed electricity supplier in Pakistan. It currently serves 3.4 million customers.
Summary
K-Electric discloses information on certain topics related to urban sustainability but lacks disclosure on many important topics. The company publishes its sustainability strategy, which centres around quality and diversity, and has established a sustainability council to drive this strategy forward. However, K-Electric should incorporate environmental impacts into its sustainability strategy and assign clear oversight to its board to ensure robust decision-making.
K-Electric reports annual increases in the efficiency and reliability of its energy services. It also reports regularly on its water withdrawal. However, there are gaps in its reporting on air and water pollution, while its reported data on energy consumption and waste generation is not disaggregated by category, making it difficult to evaluate the company’s full impact on the environment.
K-Electric discloses actions to improve access to affordable energy for low-income households, including its Solar Microfinance Facility Programme in partnership with the Pakistani National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), and its contribution to the Saylani Welfare Trust Electricity Bill Fund. The company can further report the outcomes of these initiatives, such as the number of beneficiaries. K-Electric can also strengthen its commitments to respect human rights across its supply chain.
