Walmart is the largest retailer in the world, operating a chain of hypermarkets and discount department stores. It employs over 2.3 million associates worldwide across 11,500 stores under 56 banners in 27 countries and e-commerce websites in ten countries. In 2020, the company had US$559 billion in revenue.
Summary
Walmart ranks 21st in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 24.1 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 3 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on governance and strategy and representation. However, it lags behind most notably in health and well-being and compensation and benefits.
Walmart seeks employee feedback on gender issues in several ways, such as via one-on-one interactions, digital mediums and employee townhalls. It has also incorporated employee feedback on gender issues into its company policies, for example by improving parental leave benefits to its US-based employees. Moreover, Walmart publicly commits to gender-responsive procurement through its Supplier Inclusion Program. It also actively procures from women-owned businesses and tracks its spending towards these businesses.
While Walmart has established a gender strategy across its value chain, it should display a stronger commitment to its gender efforts in the supply chain, for example by identifying gender-related issues that require corrective action . The company fails to ensure a gender-responsive, safe and healthy work environment for the women workers in its supply chain and provide them with gender-responsive health information and services, for example, by requiring suppliers to have on-site health clinics with credentialed providers. It also does not ensure suppliers provide their workers with written contracts , a living wage or family-friendly benefits . In its own operations, Walmart does not offer employees flexible working options or paid carer leave.
