Target is one of the largest general merchandise retailers in the United States with 44 private labels and over 1,800 stores. The company employs 409,000 people across its operations in the 50 states. In 2020, it had a revenue of US$93.6 billion.
Summary
Target ranks fourth in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 47.3 out of 100. It displays leading practice in 12 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers in representation and violence and harassment. However, the company lags behind on governance and strategy and health and well-being.
Target is the only company to maintain a gender balance (between 40-60% women) across three levels of leadership: senior executives, senior management, and middle/other management. In the supply chain, the company requires its suppliers to provide training to their hiring managers to ensure a non-biased approach to the recruitment and promotion of married and pregnant women workers . It also actively prevents violence and harassment in the workplace by offering employees compliance trainings on discrimination and harassment. Furthermore, it requires suppliers to have an effective remediation process for addressing violence and harassment grievances in a written policy and details appropriate disciplinary procedures for perpetrators .
However, there is no evidence that Target has established a gender strategy across its value chain or screens for gender-related human rights impacts as part of its human rights due diligence process. The company covers some of the costs associated with mental health, such as offering five free sessions with a licensed mental health professional, though it has not made a commitment to providing supply chain workers with gender-responsive health information and services or require suppliers to have an on-site health clinic with credentialed providers. As for compensation and benefits, the company fails to disclose its global gender pay gap or provide at least 14 weeks paid primary carer leave to its employees, as recommended by the ILO.
