Nike is one of the world's largest athletic footwear, apparel, equipment and accessory companies with over ten major brands in its portfolio. It employs 75,400 people and has operations across 170 countries. In 2020, the company had $37.4 billion in revenue.
Summary
Nike ranks eight in this year’s Gender Benchmark, with a score of 45.2 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 11 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on representation and violence and harassment. However, the company lags behind on compensation and benefits, particularly in the supply chain.
Nike offers three professional development programmes that ensure women employees benefit – Xcelerate, Amplify and E-VOLVE – and tracks the number of women participating. It also collects gender data on the percentage of employees promoted. In the supply chain, Nike is one of two companies that requires its suppliers to provide training to its hiring managers to ensure a non-biased approach to the recruitment and promotion of married or pregnant women workers in the supply chain. Moreover, the company actively prevents violence and harassment among supply chain workers by requiring its suppliers to provide training on their harassment and abuse policy to its managers and supervisors.
While Nike has a global policy of providing at least 14 weeks of paid primary carer leave to full-time employees, as recommended by the ILO, the company does not disclose its global gender pay gap. There is also no evidence to suggest it ensures that supply chain workers are provided with a living wage or family-friendly benefits . Furthermore, while Nike displays a commitment to women’s empowerment in the workplace, it fails to offer the same professional development opportunities for women working in its supply chain or require its suppliers to collect gender data by leadership level.
