Cooperatie Coforta

Coöperatie Coforta is a Dutch agricultural cooperative consisting of 500 fruit and vegetable growers. The cooperative supplies its products to supermarkets, caterers and wholesalers through its wholly owned subsidiary The Greenery, an international sales and marketing organisation for fresh fruit and vegetables. The company also holds a leading retail market position in the Dutch mushroom market, processing over 700 tons of mushrooms every week. The Greenery is among the leading suppliers for hard and soft fruit, open field and greenhouse vegetables in the Netherlands. Through its organic branch Naturelle, the company supplies a year-round range of organic fruits, vegetables and mushrooms.

Coöperatie Coforta sells fresh fruit and vegetables globally through its subsidiary The Greenery. The baseline assessment only evaluated corporate commitments publicly disclosed in English and available during the September-October 2020 research period. While no relevant disclosure was found on Coöperatie Coforta’s website, The Greenery publicly discloses several relevant commitments, particularly in the nutrition dimension. In terms of the environment, although reporting on its GHG emissions, The Greenery has not formulated time-bound targets relating to this or other key environmental topics, including soil health, optimising fertiliser and pesticide use and minimising freshwater use. In the nutrition dimension, The Greenery provides evidence of its efforts to improve the accessibility and affordability of fresh fruit and vegetables and use marketing strategies to promote healthy eating. Moreover, the company complies with food safety standards and certifications. However, no evidence was found relating to workforce nutrition. Regarding social inclusion, The Greenery commits to ensuring health and safety in its own operations, but it does not commit to eliminating child and forced labour, paying its employees a living wage or supporting smallholder productivity.
