Mercadona is one of the largest supermarkets and online retail companies in Spain, as well as having a strong market presence in Portugal through subsidiary Irmadona. Mercadona began as a small butcher shop in Valencia in 1977 and today has grown to operate 1,636 supermarkets, serving an estimated 5.4 million households. In 2019, the company sold 12,050 kilos of product across its portfolio of food, home care, personal care and pet care products.
Mercadona operates in the food and beverage manufacturers/processors and food retailers segments and ranks in the middle of the pack for both. Compared to its food retailer peers, the company lags behind in the environment measurement area, ranking in towards the lower end, due to its lack of targets on many key topics such a water use and deforestation. The company ranks in the middle of the pack on the other three measurement areas – governance and strategy, nutrition, and social inclusion – although there remains considerable room for improvement on all of these.
