Marfrig Global Foods (Marfrig) is primarily engaged in the processing and distribution of meat, with 21 primary processing units, 12 further processing units and ten distribution centres and commercial offices spread across Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and the United States. It is one of the world leaders in the production of hamburgers, with a processing capacity of 232,000 tons per year. Its products, sold to large restaurant and supermarket chains, reach the tables of millions of consumers in nearly 100 countries every day. In 2018, Marfrig acquired a majority stake in National Beef Packing Company, one of the largest livestock companies in the United States.
Marfrig ranks 23rd in the animal protein segment, putting it in the top quartile. Among livestock companies, Marfrig discloses significant information on efforts to curb deforestation, including satellite mapping and purchase tracing. While Marfrig’s efforts to reduce water use and scope 3 GHG emissions are also above average among its peers, the company does not disclose any activities to reduce plastic and packaging waste and food loss and waste. Finally, Marfrig underperforms on the social inclusion indicators relative to its segment peers, especially regarding the protection of human rights. The company can improve its performance by integrating a social dimension into its sustainability strategy, setting related targets and reporting progress against them. Marfrig also ranks 91st among food and beverage processors, demonstrating similar strengths and weaknesses as above.
