The Climate & Energy Benchmark assesses 25 companies in the automotive sector on their contributions to limiting global warming to well below 2°C. The benchmark is the first WBA has undertaken to measure and rank the climate action performance of high-carbon emitting industries, including electric utilities and oil & gas. These benchmarks will collectively support a larger effort by WBA to measure and rank 2,000 of the world’s most influential companies across seven systems of transformation, including decarbonization and energy system, critical to achieving the SDGs and the Paris Agreement.

This benchmark shows that the 25 auto manufacturers are not on track to meet the goal set by the Paris Agreement. We see that most companies have a low carbon vehicle, but there is very little investment in this market. There needs to be a more positive and proactive approach. The industry needs to work with trade associations and react to climate policy. The car companies have a responsibility to future generations to change the high emission mobility culture.
